Stadium History
One of the most breathtaking stadiums in the country, Historic Memorial Stadium at the University of Illinois holds an esteemed position among the nation’s elite sports facilities. Its regal colonnades and austere brick and limestone façades have dominated the central Illinois landscape for generations. As the renovation of this historic stadium begins, rest assured that great steps are being taken to ensure that the architecture and other historic qualities of Memorial Stadium will remain as they have always been. University administration is working closely with state and national historic officers to monitor progress and maintain diligent compliance with rehabilitation standards. Following completion of the project, the University then hopes to earn Memorial Stadium the designation of National Historic Landmark, the highest national distinction available to historic structures.
