Summary of Career
Finishing up his fifteenth year in the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics, former 1st Team All-Big Ten Wide Receiver Shawn Wax now serves as Senior Associate Athletic Director on Ron Guenther’s executive management team. Wax is responsible for revenue generation for the athletic department and its $66 Million annual budget including all development, alumni and ticketing operations. As the chief development officer in the department, he has successfully spearheaded two separate capital campaigns, a seven-year $80 Million campaign and most recently a six-year $135 Million campaign.
Prior to his latest promotion, Wax served as Associate Athletic Director for Resource Development. He and his team were responsible for generating the revenue for the critically acclaimed $131 Million facelift at Memorial Stadium. Additionally, under his creative leadership and in less than three years, the DIA saw football ticket revenue increase from $5.8 Million per year to over $10 Million per year and men’s basketball revenue increase from $4.8 Million per year to nearly $6.5 Million per year.
Highly regarded for his creative thinking and motivational ability, Wax was able to renew excitement in the Varsity I Association by implementing a comprehensive communication strategy that reconnected former athletes with the university. During his tenure as Director of the Varsity I Association, the organization grew from 620 members to over 1700 members. Former letter winners now donate more than $900,000 per year to the athletic department to fund academic support services; Illinois is one of the top ten in the country in such efforts.
Finally, Wax has worked hand in hand with the Orange Krush foundation to generate support for several community projects as well as campus initiatives. He secured the funding for the $250K Matt Heldman Fund, the $300K Rod Cardinal Fund and most recently the $500K Lou Henson Fund.
A native of the Rockford, Illinois suburb of Machesney Park, Wax graduated from Harlem High School in 1986. He continued his education at the University of Illinois, earning his degree in Political Science in 1991.
